System Requirements
Consultant runs on any Apple® Macintosh® or 100% compatible computer with a minimum of 2.5 Megabytes of free RAM (Random Access Memory). Consultant is available in PowerPC format for Power Macintosh computers or 68k format for older 68k Macintosh computers. If you are installing Consultant on a 68k Macintosh, make sure that you use the 68k installer.
Installation Process
Your copy of Consultant has an installer application. Double-click the installer icon and select the destination folder in the installer window. The "Easy Install" option creates a new folder and installs the following items:
• Consultant
• MiniConsultant
• Palm Synchronization Folder
• Internet Config Folder
• Various Support Files & Folders
In addition to the above, the Consultant installer places the following items in your system Extensions folder:
• Consultant Activities
• Consultant Contacts
• Internet Config Extension
To completely uninstall Consultant, simply delete the Consultant folder and the three extensions from your system Extensions folder. Also, remove the Consultant Preferences and Consultant Registration files from your system Preferences folder.
Activity & Contact Extensions
Consultant comes with two system extensions that allow you to view your schedule and favorite contacts and hear activity alarms without launching Consultant. Before using the extensions, you should do the following:
1. Launch Consultant and create a Primary File
2. Launch MiniConsultant
3. Restart your computer
The extensions (and MiniConsultant) will not work until you choose a Primary File. Whenever you create a new Consultant data file or open an existing data file, you'll be given the opportunity to designate that file as your Primary File. In addition, you should restart your computer after running Consultant & MiniConsultant the first time. This will allow the extensions to launch either program. See the "Extensions ReadMe" file in the ReadMe Files folder for more information about the extensions.
Importing
If you are currently using another Macintosh organizer and would like to transfer your information to Consultant, be sure to read the file called "Importing Help" in the "Importing" folder. It provides detailed instructions for transferring your information. The "Importing" folder also contains instructions for importing the included holiday files.
Registering Consultant
The first time you launch the Consultant application, it will ask for your registration information. If you purchased Consultant on CD, enter the registration number that came with your package. Otherwise, you may purchase a registration number from Chronos (see below).
Palm Synchronization
Consultant now includes the ability to synchronize your data file with a PalmPilot™ or Palm III™ connected organizer. Read the "Sync Guide.pdf" file in the "PalmPilot™ Synchronization" folder to find out how to use this feature. All questions regarding Palm Synchronization should be directed to Chronos—not 3COM.
A separate registration number is required to enable the Palm Synchronization feature. If you purchased Consultant on CD, a Palm Sync Registration number should have been included with your package. If you did not purchase Consultant on CD, you can obtain the registration number from Chronos for an additional $10 (see below).
To enter the Palm Sync Registration number, launch Consultant and choose "Palm Sync Setup" from the File menu.

Upgrading
Consultant upgrades are available at Chronos' web site. Maintenance upgrades are free to registered users. Upgrades are usually posted as a complete Consultant package and occasionally as an "updater".
If you download the complete Consultant package, you do not need to do anything special to transfer your registration information. After installing the new Consultant software, you can start using it immediately. The new software is installed in its own folder and does not overwrite your existing version. If you've added or modified any Template files, be sure to copy your Template files to the new Consultant folder. The same applies to Texture files.
IMPORTANT: when you create a new file using Consultant, the file is saved in the Consultant application folder (unless you choose another location). After downloading a new version of Consultant, be careful that you don't inadvertently delete your data file when you discard your old Consultant folder.
If you download an "updater", the updater application will modify your existing Consultant application to update it to the latest version. You do not need to do anything special to transfer your registration information.
Technical Support
If you have technical questions concerning Consultant or are having problems with the application, please check the support site on the World Wide Web at http://www.chronosnet.com or send an e-mail message to support@chronosnet.com.

Consultant uses the WASTE text engine developed by Marco Piovanelli with additions by Dan Crevier. Chronos thanks both individuals for their important contributions to the Macintosh community.
Some of the textures in Consultant's Texture Library were created with Fractal Design Painter. For more information about an excellent line of graphics software, go to:

Version 2.54/2.55
• Added "Themes" feature. A theme consists of a picture (JPEG), a texture and various color settings. The picture appears in the background of the Week and Month Views. You can place your own pictures in the Pictures folder (in the Themes folder in the Consultant application folder). The Textures folder has also been moved to the Themes folder (remember to move your current textures to the new location after you install Consultant). You can choose your own colors for the Day, Multiday, Week and Month views. You can create as many themes as you like and switch between them at any time. Look for the Theme controls in the Appearance preferences dialog or under the Edit menu.
• If an activity or contact is selected in one of the List views, hitting return will open the Activity Window or Contact Card to the appropriate record.
• Can now use the up/down arrows to navigate in the List views.
• Clicking the e-mail button next to an e-mail address in the Contact Card View only worked if the e-mail address was in the form "info@chronosnet.com". It wouldn't work if it was in the form "mailto:info@chronosnet.com" -- fixed.
• User can type a few letters to find matching items in the Contact List and Contact Card views. However, the matching occasionally wasn't working correctly if the list was being sorted "Last Name" or by "Company" (depending on how the contacts were formatted) -- fixed.
• When deleting repeating activities using the Edit->Delete command, Consultant asks if you want to delete a single occurrence or the entire activity. Previously, this only happened when you dragged the activity to the trash can on the button bar.
• Previously, when generating Fax Cover sheets using the Fax Cover template, the fax number for the selected contact wouldn't be filled in correctly if that contact was PUBLIC -- fixed.
• The Memo View wasn't checking the Open Views preference. For example, if the preference was set to "1 View Only", opening the Memo View wouldn't close the previous view -- fixed.
• Improved Consultant's label features. Previously, long fields (eg. a long company name) would overflow the available space in the label and would cause significant formatting problems. Now, long fields are truncated to the space available. Previously, if one contact had a company name and another did not, a blank line would be left on the second label. Now, Consultant removes any blank lines from the labels.
• Fixed problem that occasionally caused a multiple entry search of the Daily Notes to fail (wouldn't correctly locate the text on a previous day).
• Return characters in Now Up-to-Date notes weren't being imported correctly (they were converted to vertical tab characters by Now Up-to-Date, but weren't converted back to return characters when importing into Consultant).
• Changed "Save To Notes" in the Import dialog so that it can save any length of text to the notes. Previously, it could only save up to 255 characters. This allows Now Contact users to save both their "Notes" and "Comments" text to the Notes field in Consultant.
• Fixed problem with alarms in Activity extension. If a repeating activity had an alarm set, sometimes an alarm earlier in the day wouldn't sound until Consultant was launched.
• Fixed problem with international dialing (country code wasn't being handled properly).
• Fixed problem with dialing exceptions.
• Contact Card fields (and other fields in Consultant) are now double-byte compatible.
• Can now choose ANY color for a category in the Define Sets dialog.
• New Palm Synchronization Conduit
Version 2.53
• The Consultant Activities extension now uses the "To-Do Forwarding" preference. Previously, the extension always forwarded incomplete to-do items (even if the preference was not selected).
• There are 2 new contact preferences (Edit->Preferences->Contacts). These preferences apply to the Consultant Contacts extension. "Contact Extension Format" specifies how the extension menu displays your Favorite contacts. You can choose different combinations of First, Last and Company names. "Contact Extension Phone" specifies which phone number will be used in the extension menu for your favorite contacts.
• Added the ability to do intelligent contact searching. If you choose "Find" from the Edit menu, you can now enter incomplete names or even initials when searching for contacts. For example, if you have a contact named "John Doe", you can search for any of the following: "John D", "J Doe" or "J D".
• Fixed a problem when using the "Find" dialog to search for activities and contacts (which opens a List view with the Find results). If the "Search All Fields" button was selected and the search was NOT case-sensitive, then if you clicked in a column label in the List dialog to sort on that column, some or all of the entries would disappear. The only entries that would remain were those whose "case" matched the search string (ie. it became a case-sensitive search).
• Fixed a problem that appeared in version 2.52. If you changed the order of the columns in the List View, the next time you opened that view, there would appear to be multiple columns. Then if you closed/re-opened the view, the column order would revert to the original order.
• Clicking the button next to an e-mail address in the Contact Card view would occasionally create 2 e-mail messages instead of one.
• Inadvertantly changed the text color for appointments in the Day/Multiday Views in a previous version (it should have been left as black).
• The Private button in the Memo View wasn't being repositioned correctly when the List of memos was resized (the divider was dragged to the right).
• If user entered a complete web address (eg. http://www.chronosnet.com), Consultant would add an extra "http://" to the beginning of the address. Now it works whether you include the "http://" or not.
Palm Synchronization Conduit
• conduit only syncs relevant categories for a given PalmPilot app so you don't end up with all of Consultant's categories in every Palm app. Only the categories actually used are synced.
• Fixed bug for Memos in which return characters were translated incorrectly.
• Added feature to correctly translate international characters.
• Fixed bug where Pilot->Consultant sync for contacts wasn't filling in the Last Modified field.
• Added log error messages to better report out of memory situations.
• Added error log messages for more specific HotSync Manager error codes.
• Added and improved several error log messages.
• Added record counts to log for slow and fast syncing.
• Fixed problem where public and other user's data was being synced.
• Fixed bug where Favorite, Business, and Marked were getting reset in Consultant after a sync.
